Grammar School

Grammar School students (K-6) have a unique ability to capture in their minds amazing amounts of information.  The cliche says their minds are like sponges.  Has your child ever asked you to read a particular book over and over and over?  It is because their neurons are creating networks to connect thoughts.  These superhighways of information are never lost!

I bet you can still remember silly ditties from your grade school days. For that reason, you will find kids in our grammar school singing about grammar and clapping a beat as they recite a historical time line.

Cornerstone Academy is unique in its approach to teaching students.  We group in the morning for math and language in ability groups rather than age groups.  Each child is given the opportunity to excel at their own pace in subjects like reading, grammar, spelling and math.  Click here for more details about the curriculum standards at Cornerstone.

Following the classical model, each grade focuses on a specific historical time period.  Since our brains learn best when things make sense and connect, all other subjects are integrated into the historical studies.  For example, when a first grader is learning about Ancient Egypt, they read about the biblical stories of that time and study the life cycle of plants just as the Egyptians discovered the patterns of growth through irrigation.  For more information on Classical Education, visit insideclassicaled.com

Students are taught to love God and love others.  We have built relationships with the community to serve in local venues.  Training our children early in ways to do community service will keep them connected to those in need later in their lives too.

  •  1st Graders visit residents at Regency Care center once a month.  They recite their bible verse, sing worship songs, do art projects and most importantly, create relationships.  Once a year, they choose a special project to bless the residence.  One year, they collected items for residents’ Christmas stockings, another year for Easter baskets.   They also write to pen pals at an orphanage in Mexico.
  • 2nd & 3rd Graders volunteer their time each month at Take the Next Step.  This is a wonderful opportunity for them to see the needs of those less fortunate in their own town.  Students clean, organize, assemble crafts and prepare snacks for their cliental.  This year they held a coat drive collecting over 300 coats for the winter season and raising so much community awareness that coats are still coming in!  They have pen pals at an orphanage in Thailand and annually hold a drive to support them.
  • 4th-6th Graders help out each month at Matthew House.  They have learned about the needs of the families of prisoners and work to organize, clean and prepare for them.  This Christmas, they decided to individually earn extra money so each could purchase a gift for a child.  They have pen pals at an orphanage in Nepal who they write to and pray for.

Grammar Curriculum

Curriculum in each grade is build like a scaffold on previous learning.  Each year revisits the past and grows knowledge in greater depth and breadth.  Aligning to the philosophy of classical education, each year is based on the timeline of history and all the other subjects are integrated meaningfully.  This chart represents the whole picture …
