| Kindergarten Curriculum Our Mission is to provide classical, Christian education that is parent directed, student centered, and powered by passionate educators. Overview
Kindergarteners are in the Grammar Stage; this is when children are most receptive to basic facts. For some students, this is their first encounter with formal schooling. Learning is activity based, cultivates imagination, and challenges them intellectually. Language Arts Students are using “Spell to Write and Read” to formally learn spelling rules and practice handwriting. Reading - Reading is the single most important skill that a child will learn in school. Our reading instruction begins in preschool and is built on a phonics-based approach. The students memorize 70 phonograms and the letters or group of letters that represent one sound. The students apply their knowledge of phonograms and English rules to analyze and spell the 1,000 most commonly used words in the English language (the Ayre's List.) Reading instruction is individualized so that students are challenged to excel and progress to levels beyond their grade level. Writing – A kindergartener’s writing ability increases drastically over the course of the school year. They start learning how to properly shape letters legibly, then progress to writing letter blends and finally words. Writing activities are integrated into daily lessons in bible, science, math and social studies. Spelling –The Spell to Write and Read method used is a multi-sensory approach where students learn to spell by saying, hearing, writing, and seeing, thereby using all learning styles of the brain. Science Science is integrated into the Social Studies concepts. Activities will be hands on and students will learn about topics like habitat, geology, and natural laws like magnetism. Staying true to the classical approach, students will learn the basic facts of many science concepts so when they are revisited in later years, students can build on their prior knowledge. Social Studies The kindergarten curriculum expands a child’s understanding of communities to a global level. Our program is based on the study of the seven continents with each of the other subjects integrated into these. Math Hands on, practical, and fun describe the math activities kindergarteners do. Students will work through the topics covered in Math Their Way on an individual basis. This curriculum is founded on more than 20 years of research and relies on manipulatives rather than textbooks. The concepts of graphing, patterning, grouping, and basic math operations are covered extensively. Fine Arts
Music – Music, both instrumental and vocal, are used seamlessly in class to convey ideas. Songs representing each continent are used in class to discover culture and appreciate musical appreciation. Art – Varieties of artistic mediums are used in projects students will do throughout the year. Children are encouraged to express their own creative ideas as an artist. Art forms explored include painting, pastels, drawing, and collage. Physical Education
The kindergarten program, being only part time does not have a formal PE time. Families are encouraged to enroll students in community sports and classes. The structure of the classroom is designed for a great deal of movement. Students have many opportunities for kinesthetic learning in the classroom. Technology
Students will have access to computers at home and the public library to extend learning done in the classroom. Each week, the teacher will send home a newsletter outlining ideas students can do at home to amplify their learning. | |
